I used to believe that by being a bonafide alternative black girl meant that I was denying an essential part of who I am — my blackness. Now that I am a grown woman I realize that one thing does not negate the other. There is no strict definition on what blackness is, nor are there limitations on who you can be. I love my weirdness, but it was a bumpy ride getting to this place of self love, and it all started by wearing a pink wig to high school.
